From lacerations to fevers to last-minute physicals and X-rays, a new CityMD Urgent Care clinic is now seeing patients in Capitol Hill.

A CHI Franciscan Health partner, CityMD has local urgent care facilities in West Seattle, Ravenna, Kent and Federal Way. Its Capitol Hill clinic is in space occupied by the twice-shuttered Charlie’s on Broadway, 217 Broadway E.

In fact, CityMD recently pulled from the walls a number of letters written by the former bar’s patrons and documented them, said Dr. Joe Passanante, Senior Vice President of Medical Operations - Northwest Region, CityMD. The old brick walls inside the spacious waiting room have been left blank, and are one of the only signs of what the clinic used to be.

There are nine exam rooms in CityMD Capitol Hill, plus an X-ray room and on-site lab services. The clinic can accommodate up to 100 patients a day, Passanante said.

“We see 1.5 million patients a year, and our average wait time is less than eight minutes,” he said. “That’s how the encounter starts, and it gets better when we get back (to the exam room).”

CityMD uses heat maps to track trends for when patients come in, so staffing can be adjusted, but typically there is a physician, medical assistant, X-ray technician, clinic manager, patient care manager and scribe on hand during clinic hours, which are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

“We also do a lot of first-dose antibiotics,” Passanante said, which helps patients avoid having to go straight from the clinic to a pharmacy to pick up a prescription. “I do think our first-dose plan, it really does go a long way.”

All CityMD physicians are required to pass a test upon hiring, which includes proving proficiency in reading EKGs, clinical scenarios, reading X-rays and suturing. While not part of the test, good bedside manner is another criteria.

“ ‘We serve kindness’ is the motto of our company,” Passanante said.

Urgent care patients in need of a specialist or primary physician can be connected by CityMD through CHI Franciscan’s network of providers.

“We help keep people out of the emergency room, and one of the ways we do that is with our partner Franciscan CHI,” Passanante said.

The first CityMD/CHI Franciscan facility opened in August 2016.

CHI Franciscan Health follows the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, but serves all patients regardless of race, faith, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Its physicians are able to prescribe birth control and provide STD and HIV testing.
