People judge books by their covers and I did the same for The Phantom Tollbooth. Instead it was an amazing story with colorful characters and creative places. The Phantom Tollbooth taught me about change and the importance of friendship. The story showed how Milo changed so much during his adventure and how Milo and Tocks friendship is very important.
Before the adventure Milo was a dull sad kid, he never found anything interesting and never had fun. You might think that this is not his fault, when he tries he does not find anything exciting. However he never tries and it is his responsibility to go out and there and open up to new things. During the adventure he was more open to new things and started to be curious and happy because everything was new and exciting other than dull and boring. After his adventure he was happier and opened up to new things. He learned that life is not just a bore, but exciting and thrilling beyond his wildest dreams. Sometimes Milo forgets those things but this adventure changed him forever.
There are many ways that I felt as though Milo influenced me. First of all he learned you have to change and open up. It took him a long time to figure that out but when he did he wasn’t sad or boring anymore. Also the book is saying that Milo got away from his troubles by having courage, creativity and imagination. So, when I read it I felt that if I was creative, had imagination and courage I would be in amazing adventures like Milo. Also, Milo influenced me to be ok with change. He changed and he is happy but sometimes it can be scary or you might think it will be the same boring life. It was his responsibility to go out there and find his own adventures and he wouldn’t do that until he got an opportunity. It’s ok to ask for a little nudge but never let somebody do all the work for you.
Another person that influenced me was Milo’s friend Tock. He was an influence to me because he never left Milo’s side. He was always there for him. An example is like when they first met, Tock did not leave Milo’s side because Milo was lost and sad. Instead he helped Milo get to his destination. To me that was a huge sign of friendship and compassion. Also when they first met, Tock was very rough with contact. But on the way to their destination he apologized. Because he knew that he scared Milo and that when you make mistakes you sometimes have to make up for them. Also on the mountain of demons they were faced with some terrible monsters. But Tock had courage and stayed with Milo and tried to help him. I feel like I relate to Tock.
My personal feeling towards this story was excitement! I never knew what was coming next. My favorite part was when they were sitting down for the banquet and the king arrived. This was my favorite part because the author really was descriptive about the king and what he looked like. You could really tell when he talked he was fierce. I could just imagine the king talking in a low gravely, voice and his piercing eyes staring down at Tock and Milo.
I do not blame Milo for being in a bad mood but it was up to him to change and he did. Because of this he taught me the importance of friendship and courage. When I get older I hope I am not like Milo before the adventure because I wouldn’t want to have no interest in anything or ever be bored. But if I got sent on a adventure like Milo’s, I would want to have a friend like Tock and learn a lesson.
