Sad news for people who like good things: North Hill Bakery’s final day of business is October 31.
North Hill Bakery came to 518 15th Avenue East in 2000, opened by Margaret Rumpeltes and Tracy Peterson, and is one of the few remaining spots on the Hill that serves quality baked goods without hauteur. There, one can find decedent chiffon cakes, wedding cakes to order, as well as slices of pie or quiche, a cup of Joe, and a cozy table to linger at.
When asked why the bakery was shutting down, a morning employee’s sweet and simple response was “gentrification.”
“We lost our lease,” she told The Capitol Hill Times, as I savored more than one of the Nut Bar samples at the counter. “There was an old woman who owned it, and now she’s lost control of the property. One of her children is a developer.”
Onward goes the trend.
Right now, who will be moving into the space is unknown. And though the bakery doesn’t have a plan for the immediate future, anyone wishing to stay updated if there is a next move should hurry in and add their email address to the clipboard located near the register.
