Despite budget projections in 2012 indicating there was only funding to hire a handful of new Seattle Police Department officers, Mayor McGinn’s proposed 2014 budget makes room for 15. In a press conference, the mayor said that the decision to focus money above and beyond the expected funding for 2014 on hiring additional officers comes from information gathered at community outreach events over the past year.
The City of Seattle has partnered with the Urban Forestry Commission to defend the very reason ours is called the “Evergreen State.” The new Urban Forest Stewardship Plan includes planting, maintenance, education programs and other government assessment tools to promote increased canopy tree coverage throughout Seattle. Today, Seattle’s canopy is estimated at around 23 percent. The Stewardship Plan is designed to increase that number to 30 percent by the year 2037.
City Council President Sally Clark is keen on business. She’s hosting the Seattle Business Organizations Symposium this Friday at City Hall, where guest speakers will present on topics such as increasing media exposure, event production and neighborhood engagement. The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Admission is free.
