The Hill’s top five chocolate chip cookies

With an over abundance of restaurants on Capitol Hill, choosing where to eat is easy. The hard part is where to find dessert or, specifically, a home baked chocolate chip cookie without turning your oven on. This past week, I have eaten my weight in cookies to find the best of the best and have emerged five pounds heavier. It was worth it though, because I have found the five best chocolate chip cookies in all the land. Now go on and get cookie wasted.

 

Volunteer Park Café

This café’ serves up chocolate chip cookies ($2.74) the size of your head. When you take a bite, a crispy outside gives in to a gooey middle while a mix of milk and dark chocolate chips give you the best of both worlds. They are reminiscent of Toll House, taken up a notch.  Your inner kid will thank you.

 

North Hill Bakery

518 15th Avenue East

North Hill Bakery has secured their location on 15th for 12 years due to their traditional scratch baking methods and cozy atmosphere. They’re chocolate chip cookies are beautifully unfussy. It has an all around crispy exterior, a rich buttery flavor and is dotted with milk chocolate chips. The chewy bliss of these fluffy cookies will bring a smile to your face. At only $1.25, they are a bargain.

 

Crumble and Flake

Only open for a few short months, Crumble and Flake has become the hottest new bakery on the Hill. Some of their most popular items are sold out in the first two hours after they open their doors. However, lucky for you, their overlooked cookies are usually still available.  The chocolate chip cookie ($2.00) is soft and chewy, studded with pecans and Belgian chocolate chips. It can stand alone with or without milk, which says volumes about the melt-in-your-mouth goodness of these tasty treats.

 

Oddfellows Café + Bar

1525 10th Avenue

Owned by the bar scene mogul, Linda Derschang, Oddfellows is called Capitol Hill’s living room for homemade baked goods. Using the perfect combination of the finest ingredients, this gourmet chocolate chip cookie ($2.19) is chewy with a crisp outside. Huge chunks of chopped up chocolate speckle the dough. Rumor has it; it is one of Derschang’s favorite items on the menu.

 

Columbia City Bakery

Every Sunday, Columbia City Bakery sells its baked goods at the Broadway Farmers Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. These lip smacking, irresistible chocolate chip cookies, otherwise known as The Columbia Super Chip ($1.25), have a base note of caramel from the toffee bits with a rich and luscious interior. Dark chocolate chips give the right amount of bitterness to the buttery flavor.
