The only thing that I don’t love about traditional cheesecake is that between the baking and cooling, it takes a long time to make – at least eight hours if you’re lucky. Bavarian apple torte, on the other hand, tastes a lot like cheesecake, but with the happy addition of apples and a shortbread pastry crust, requires little effort to prepare and only 35 minutes to bake. Of course, when you bring this torte to your next dinner party, and all of your friends are ohhing and awwing about the sophisticated apple arrangement, all that can be our secret.
Bavarian Apple Torte
Ingredients
Crust:
½ cup butter, softened
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup flour
Filling:
1/3 cup sugar
205 grams cream cheese
1 egg
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 and ½ to 2 apples, sliced thinly
Cinnamon
Directions
1. In a large bowl, blend butter, 1/3 cup sugar and flour, then spread and pack evenly into spring form pan.
2. In a medium bowl, blend 1/3 cup sugar, cream cheese, egg and vanilla. Pour evenly onto crust.
3. Arrange apples on custard, then sprinkle with cinnamon.
4. Bake for 10 minutes at 425º F (220º C), then lower temperature to 375º F (190º C) and continue baking for 25 minutes. Let cool.
